CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Alana sat up straight in her seat, trying to hear what was going on at the front of the plane. A minute ago, she’d heard a woman say there was nothing to be done for the man in the back. His wife’s uncontrollable sobs filled the cabin.

By now, everyone around her had taken off their oxygen masks, but the sight of them dangling from the ceiling sent a ripple of fear through her body.

Ever since the flight attendant had made the announcement asking if there were any pilots on board, passengers had been panicking. Everyone had questions. What happened to the experienced pilot who was flying the plane? Why did they need another pilot?

In slurred speech, the man behind Alana demanded to know when they were going to land. He’d gone quiet after the oxygen masks dropped, but his voice had returned to a belligerent decibel in the minutes since Linda’s announcement.

Linda went rushing through first class toward the cockpit. Alana watched the man sitting behind her follow Linda to the front of the plane, swaying down the aisle from the armful of miniature liquor bottles he’d knocked back after raiding the first-class galley. It left only four of them in first class, and they listened as the drunk man started to argue with Linda.

After a couple minutes, Alana heard Linda yell at the man to return to his seat so she could make an announcement. It was the first time Alana heard panic in the attendant’s voice. The Army corporal rose from his seat and marched toward the front. Seconds later, he led the unruly passenger by the arm back to his seat behind Alana’s as Linda’s voice came over the Intercom.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I need you all to return to your seats and remain calm. I regret to inform you that the flight attendant who was piloting our aircraft was a part of the hijacking.”

Alana’s stomach turned.

Linda continued. "But there is no cause for panic—she has been um…incapacitated.”

Gasps and shouts erupted from the main cabin, making Alana strain to hear the rest of Linda’s announcement.

“Please keep calm,” Linda continued. “We have someone on board who has landed this exact aircraft in a simulator and has piloting experience. She will be talked through the landing by one of our trained pilots over the radio.”

Alana glanced at the two empty seats across from her. Linda must be referring to the nurse. There was an uproar of passengers shouting over each other in the main cabin.

“Heaven help us,” the woman in front of her said.

A part of the hijacking. Alana’s mind raced. She was sure now that she was the target of the attack. Eddie was worth over one hundred and fifty billion dollars. This had to be about money.

She pulled out her phone and switched it out of airplane mode. But there was still no service.

Linda’s voice came back over the Intercom. “I need everyone’s cooperation on board to keep calm. In a few moments, I will begin making further announcements to prepare for an emergency landing.
